Since the “modern works” portion of my English curriculum is over, the tumblr project that VocaVictory was for isn’t obligatory anymore. It was pretty well-received by both my English teacher and a lot of Vocaloid fans on tumblr, so it was definitely a success!
Even though I don’t need to use it anymore, I’m probably going to keep posting there whenever there’s some kind of in-depth Vocaloid topic that can be covered. I might also open it up to submissions or requests.
Thanks to anyone who followed it~
Reblogged from my personal account, in case any of you are curious.
(Warning: it’s not always about Vocaloid and it’s occasionally NSFW and lots of trigger warnings etc., basically it’s as personal-interest-based as it’s gonna get)
Although the Vocaloid fandom seems like it’s often on highs, with non-stop new content and the recent rise into mainstream Japanese pop culture, it does hit quite a few lows. Such events cause quite a bit of turmoil in all parts of the community, whether or not fans are directly involved. As Vocaloid expands, it’s always good to look back at what went wrong – and issues that still happen today.
VOCALOID terms
Attack - Describes the beginning of the note, and the manner in which it is done. In VOCALOID, types of attack include Accent, Hard Accent, Legato, Slow Legato, and Normal.
Accent - A hard/loud attack, an attack in which the beginning of the note is louder.
Breathiness - A parameter that affects the wieght of the breath in the voice.
Brightness - A parameter that affects the brightness of the voice. Higher settings create a brighter tone. Lower settings create a darker, warmer tone.
Clearness - A parameter that affects the clearness of the voice. Higher settings create a brighter tone that cuts through more.
Crescendo - A gradual increase in dynamics. In VOCALOID1, there was an icon for it. In VOCALOID2, you have to use the DYN parameter.
Decrescendo - A gradual decrease in dynamics. In VOCALOID1, there was an icon for it. In VOCALOID2, you have to use the DYN parameter.
Dynamics - The musical term for volume. In VOCALOID, its arguably the most important parameter. Affects the volume of the voice and is extremely important in creating musical expresion.
Gender Factor - A parameter that makes the voice sound more masculine or feminine. higher settings create a more masculine voice. Lower settings create a more feminine voice. Intended for fixing various naunces in the vocal output, it can also be used for genderbends.
Legato - A softer/slower attack in which the beginning of the note is quieter.
Note - Just like it sounds, its a note on which lyrics are applied to produce an output in VOCALOID.
Openness - A parameter that affects the openness of the singers “mouth”. Affects pronunciation the most out of any of the parameters. Lower settings will create a more muffled, less distinct pronunciation.
Parameter - A funcion used in the editing process to make the vocal output more realistic.
—Parameters in VOCALOID2 include Velocity (VEL), Dynamics (DYN), Breathiness (BRE), Brightness (BRI), Clearness (CLE), Openness (OPE), Gender Factor (GEN), Portamento (POR), Pitch Bend (PIT), and Pitch Bend Sensitivity (PBS).
—VOCALOID1 has the following parameters Velocity, Dynamics ( Which is a two part step ), Resonance 1 - 4 ( each containing sub parameters called Frequency, Bandwidth, and Amplitude ), Harmonics, Brightness, Clearness, Gender Factor, Pitch Bend, Pitch Bend Sensitivity, Tremeolo Depth. (by sleepysheep7)
Phoneme System - The pronunciation system used by VOCALOID. Each unique sound is assigned a unique character (phoneme). By reading these characters, the VOCALOID engline determines how to pronounce words. Phonemes can be edited in VOCALOID to alter the pronunciation of words and to creqate words that the program does not recognize.
Pitch Bend - A parameter that affects the pitch of the vocal line. Lower settings lower the pitch, higher settings raise the pitch. When set at either extreme, it will move the pitch up or down as many half steps as the pitch bend sensitivity is at that point. (see: Pitch bend sensitivity)
Pitch Bend Sensitivity - Determines to what extent the pitch bend will affect the pitch of the vocal output. The value of this setting is how many half teps the pitch bent will adjust the pitch when set to either extreme. i.e., if the PBS is set to 3, then when the PIT is set all the way up, it will raise the pitch 3 half steps.
Portamento - Describes the natural pitch bend between notes when singing. In VOCALOID, the POR parameter adjusts the timing of the portamento. Higher settings push the portamento into the next note. Lower settings move the portamento back into the previous note.
Velocity - A parameter that affects the length of the consonant portion of the note.
Vibrato - The pitch fluctuation at the end of a note. VOCALOID can reproduce this affect. To set vibrato, double-click the line underneath the note. After vibrato is set, the length of the vibrato can be adjusted by dragging the jagged part of the black line underneath the note.
Vocal Output - (also: rendered file, rendered wave, synthetic singing) The output of the VSQ. The audio track created by the VOCALOID program.
Voicebank - (also: voice bank, vocal font, vocal library; abbr. VB) Term used in reference to the collection of voice samples that make up the VOCALOID’s “voice” . The VOCALOID engine reads these samples and reconstructs them to produce the synthetic singing.
VSQ - The native file that VOCALOID saves. .doc:Microsoft Word::.vsq:VOCALOID
Miscellaneous Notes of Concern
The way VOCALOID synthesizes the vocal output is so that the vowel starts in the “note on” position. Meaning the vowel starts where the note is displayed. that means that the consonant is before where the note is displayed. Please take this into consideration when editing parameters.
BRI, BRE, and OPE parameters also affect volume when edited. Take this into consideration when editing the DYN parameter.
VOCALOID is for making the vocals only. It provides no means of mixing the vocal output with the music itself. Another program sych as Audacity or FL Studio is required to mix them together
Not related to the operation of OCALOID, but i’ve seen many questions about it. VOCALOID2 (I can’t confirm VOCALOID1) DOES work with Windows 7.From: http://vocaloidotaku.net/index.php?/topic/13553-music-basics-vocaloid-basics-thread/

Vocaloid Resources is a new blog dedicated to using the VOCALOID software itself. It includes mixing guides, video tutorials, and tips on how to tune different Vocaloids to sound their best. It’s definitely an essential blog for VOCALOID users to keep on hand since VOCALOID is such a powerful software with so many little tricks.
The Vocaloid community has been quite hyped over the recent releases and announcements of new Vocaloid voice banks for the VOCALOID 3 engine – more than a dozen of them! This is a quick look into each of them.
lilytooth asked: Even if it rarely updates this blog has good information. Also, I definitely agree DECO*27 is moving away from Vocaloid. Noticeably so. But I like his stuff with human singers and don't really mind. And don't mind ryo's move to humans either, since I never cared much about any of his stuff. I just feel like my fandom is slightly less filled with his so-so music.
Just posting a follower’s opinion.

Because currently i feel…Shotacony.I don’t believe an official age for Oliver has been (or will be) set…?
His voice provider is thirteen, though.
Such a pretty voice

In the Japanese-dominated Vocaloid community, the presence of English Vocaloid – “Engloids,” as fans have come to know them – has been very small. Although many hardcore English fans appreciate the Engloids as others have appreciated “mainstream” Vocaloids, such as Miku and Gumi, the lack of songs and other derivative works has caused the impact of Engloids to falter in the community.
There is good news, though, for Engloid fans… that may change soon.
Meet the latest Engloid: Oliver.
Anonymous asked: Wouldn't you count supercell/ryo as being the biggest of producers? Then again, they're not active vocaloid producers anymore..
If you want to talk about how big of an impact they’ve had on the overall music industry, you can definitely say that supercell is the biggest Vocaloid group out there.
It seems that Crypton and Sega trying to encourage them to keep working with Miku. After all, they’re sort of an “anchor” to the commercial side of Vocaloid. Supercell has been there since the beginning, and they’ve produced some of the biggest hits to date. Today, they work on Project Diva songs, and their latest international single includes Miku.
At the moment, though, it seems like they want to keep moving towards bigger things. They’ve had a few anime collaborations already.
If you want to go with who’s actually currently doing the most work in the Vocaloid community, though, it has to be hachi, wowaka, or DECO*27. In fact, wowaka was recently nominated for a Billboard Japan award for independent producers/artists, and hachi won a popularity poll, followed by the other two. (If you ask me, I feel like DECO*27 is shifting away from Vocaloid, like ryo. Not that it’s bad.)
